Smaller news from Motorhead as frontman Lemmy Kilmister has been warned off the berries.
After the health issues the rock icon has faced recently, doctors advised him to cut down on smoking and drinking. Although among the list of things you would expect to cut down on when facing some serious body problems, blueberries isn’t exactly a list topper.
Speaking to Yahoo Music, Lemmy says:
“I would get these cravings. They found out there’s something in blueberries that isn’t good for me, so I stopped and got better.
It’s crazy – you can’t drink anything but water and can’t eat anything but fibrous bread. Getting old is a lot of fun”
Following the announcement of a new Motorhead album, due to kick off 22nd January 2015, the frontman says: “Our record company is always asking for more stuff. They want to get the most out of me as possible before I die.”
In saying that, Lemmy has proved that he’s not going down without a fight.
As always, stay heavy.

Malcolm Young's Dementia Confirmed
Terrible news comes from AC/DC as confirmation of Malcolm Young’s dementia is released.
The band had previously said that Young would not be part of the new record without a solid reason. Naturally there was a backlash from fans wanting to know a definite answer to explain his absence along with rumours of why. Taking his place on the album and tour (both rumoured to be the final acts) will be nephew Stevie Young.
Young’s family gave a rather blunt statement to People Magazine saying:
“Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy.”
This news is by far the darkest I’ve posted so far as a rock legend fights a losing battle. Last week the Syndey Morning Herald quoted a direct source:
“If you were in the room with him and walked out, then came back in one minute later, he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory.”
Malcolm Young, We Salute You.
As always, stay heavy.

Former IN FLAMES Guitarist spills the beans
In Flames have noticeably changed their sound over the past few years, moving away from their original sound and now former guitarist Jesper StrÖmblad has spoken out about what drove him to leave the band:
“Will I ever return to In Flames? No one ever knows what the future brings, but the chances are slim as they embarked on a different musical journey. They have a solid lineup and I’m on a totally different path in life right now. I would never go into details of why I quit, but there is always one official story and there is the other. Alcohol is a quite small part of it. That can also answer the next question, what do I think of their new stuff?
Listen to The Resistance and that explains a bit of it. We simply went different directions. I need to stand behind and feel inspired with what I do 100%, I owe it to the fans and obviously the band. All respect to In Flames and their new approach, but for me the band was a guitar/riff based melo-death band. And it’s not anymore, but still amazing musicianship and I don’t think it’s wrong. But it’s not the vision I had when we started out. But still, all respect to them and the huge success, highly deserved! So please, I wish, change the comment from “come back to In Flames”, to “welcome Niklas Engelin [In Flames’ new permanent guitarist], who is one of the nicest talented guys, and the one who fills my shoes perfect, and brings back and amazing energy live and personally!
So there you have it.
I do not and will never compromise with my music. I’m on a new path together with the guys from The Resistance who made me want to play again and the good feeling of being a part of a band. Dedication, friendship, genuine passion for the music! Money, fame, Grammys, etc. Doesn’t matter a crap if you’re not committed 100% to it. I also have a solo album coming up, a face-breaking EP and album with The Resistance and some other exciting projects. So everyone is where they belong. I’m in a band I love. In Flames do their thing great...all good :) love you all”
It’s comforting to see Jesper has come out of it all fighting and ready for more. In Flames still have their fan base despite the swerve in sound and The Resistance are now another band to add to my “to listen to” list. In the words from Jesper himself “all good”.
As always, stay heavy.

Napalm Death album update
Earlier this year we heard news that Napalm Death were hitting the studio to work on their new record and were getting the drum track down. As we meet October we’ve yet to hear the sweet sounds of grindcore.
Their new song “Dear Slum Landlord” played at Roadburn 2014 tied us over but we want more! Much to our pleasings, the band has released a statement giving us an update on where they stand:
“When we say that we’ve been working on the album recording for nearly a year, people might thinking that this all sounds a bit too extravagant for grindcore-type behaviour. The full story is though that we’ve been recording it in segments to try and achieve varying types of sonic assault. There is a belief in certain quarters that you can only do so much with our particularly noisy strain of music. We think otherwise, so as well as a few stylistic quirks on the album (that are sometimes happy accidents), generally it’s rawer, perhaps a little looser and of course always dense, nasty and, hopefully, invigorating too. Certainly not more polished – yuk!
Russ Russell helped us to give lots of people headaches down the years. He doesn’t mind us adopting certain, erm, techniques with studio equipment that most producer-engineers would find somewhat distasteful. So back we went again with Russ to Parlour Studios in the comparatively scene surroundings of Northamptonshire to do damage. There’s possibly some of the fastest and spazziest stuff we’ve ever done and, on the other end of the scale, some of the weirdest, most oppressive and adventurous no-wave-type stuff too.
Some song titles for you to chew on: ‘Copulating Snakes’, ‘Dear Slum Landlord’ (aired at Roadburn 2014), and ‘What is Past Is Prologue ’, ‘Stunt Your Growth. We’re nearly finished – we promise!”
From that very confusing update the words that stuck out were “spazziest” and “distasteful”. Not sure whether we should be concerned or excited. Either way, we can look out for a Napalm Death album release soon...ish.
As always, stay heavy.

Motorheading back to the studio
After proving to the world that you can’t kill Lemmy Kilmister, the Motorhead frontman confirms the band will be heading back to the studio to record their new record. Over recent months Lemmy has been battling health issues and was told to lead a healthier life style. He chose not to listen.
Aside from it all, the frontman did admit the band has yet to write the material for the new album. Despite this, he comments that this approach to a new album is not unfamiliar.
“No, nothing. [Laughs] We never have anything ready. We go into the rehearsal studio about a month before and rehearse the songs and then we go into the studio. I write the words in the studio, mostly.”
“We’ll probably go in in January to start...we don’t have a plan. Motorhead never has a plan. [Laughs]”
More so, a 2015 release would be a great recognition of Motorhead’s fortieth anniversary for a 23rd record. To still be going strong just shy of half a century later is mind-blowing. Hats off to Motorhead.

Mastadon dancer replies to sexist and racist claims on new video
Over this week Mastadon have been battling disgruntled people over claims that their new music video for "The Motherload" exploits innocent women dancing in the video. The video received mixed feedback and most people are jumping on the it's a disgrace to women bandwagon.
Posted on her tumblr, one of the dancers from the video views her opinion the backlash;
"This week has been an interesting one. At the end of August, I danced with some friends for Mastodon’s new video, “The Motherload”. We were stoked about it. Twerking in a metal video?! Unheard of! We came from varying backgrounds, classical dancers, pole dancers, strippers all nervously waiting in the common area wondering how we’d all fit in. Well that was a piece of cake. As soon as the music played, we felt jazzed—in fact, they asked us if we’d prefer to dance to some hip-hop instead and then they’d remove the sound and add their track. We declined. We all waited patiently by our machines for weeks, waiting for the video to drop. It dropped Monday.
Within minutes of the video dropping, there was a serious backlash. While most people seemed to “get” the band’s shout out to their hometown, Atlanta, others called it racist and sexist. Some people even called us dirty niggers and whores. Funny, the most sexist and racist sentiments came not from filming the actual video, but from a subset of metal fans who thought we simply didn’t belong. If anything, the video shoot was welcoming, the band clever and pleasant, and the girls bonded almost the second the music dropped. Much like the band, we weren’t concerned with thin, knee-jerk reactions to asses and twerking.
We came across from different walks of life. Real deal ATL strippers joked with me—I’m a pole dance student with a background in African American literature and cultural theory, while my ballet dancer friend laughed with the other ladies, doing pirouettes in between takes. If you read the interview in which the band says that we were having fun with each other and not for the male gaze, you should know he was totally right. My other friend who is the best conglomeration of every dancer there—pole dancer, stripper, PhD in women’s lit and African American lit focus, and a dance instructor—could be the poster child of what this was. Women having fun with each other. Praising each other. A glimpse into what we do and that we are bigger than what we do.
One of the reasons this video, for me, is garnering so much attention is that truly the women are not just asses—and there are a lot of fantastic asses in the building—but shown as 3D people, which scares folk. Another is the concern for cultural appropriation. From us and from them. The fear of metal being “tainted”, the fear of the band using a dance form associated with black culture for their own gain. These fears boil down into my one response: we all belong. This band made it such that by the time the shoot was over, we all went home and got the track. (I’m playing it on the jukebox at my local bar as I write.) This video wasn’t a spoof or mocking or satire, in my opinion. The guys are ATL homegrown. As much as metal is in their bones, so is trap music, so is Old Fourth Ward, so is Magic City. They repped Georgia not out of exploitation, but because it resonates with them and is a part of them. This video proves that metal can reach out and can be reached out to without parody, without hierarchy, and it is a good thing.
Ask us if it was racist or sexist. We were the ones right there experiencing it. I’ll tell you from my view: no.
Best,
Jade"

Asstadon..ahem...Mastadon's music video backlash
Mastadon have recently been at the butt of all jokes with their recent “controversial” video release for “The Motherload”. The video is 90% twerk and booty and it seemed to annoy a fair amount of folk.
It’s being described as “sexist”, “racist” and generally offensive. This comes from the main content of the video being groups of women (most of which being coloured) twerking along to the song.
Despite the mixed reaction to the video thus far, both the band members and dancers know exactly what it was; A load of fun. Drummer Brann Dailor commented on an accusation from The Guardian, saying;
“But no, Dom, I hear you cry, it’s not sexist. It’s funny! Look at those vibrating butt-cheeks! Brilliant. It’s probably ironic or something. Well, no. It’s still sexist. I don’t care how much irony you throw at this. It was sexist when it happened in past videos and it’s still sexist now. The fact that Mastadon are an ostensibly bright bunch and very much not from the heavy metal old school – where, back in the hallowed day, sexism was widely tolerated – is not a sufficient get-out clause by any stretch. Neither is this video excused from being tarred with the sexist brush because of a proportion of women immersed in alternative culture have decided that it’s OK”.
Drummer Dainor acknowledged and commented on the accusation when speaking to Pitchfork:
“I know! I’m really upset. I don’t know. The last thing that I wanted to do was come on and be defensive, because I don’t feel like I should have to defend it. It’s a music video and its really not supposed that gets people this upset because this was really a fun thing that doesn’t really mean too much. It’s not to be taken seriously.
I don’t know, I just don’t see the sexism in it. I know there’s half-naked women that are shaking their butts. For people it’s titillating, but for me it just looked amazing. I thought the girls were awesome and talented, and I thought it was amazing to watch. I love when it turns into that kaleidoscope effect thing; it brings the video to a whole new level.
But it’s gotten people talking obviously, you know. I figured that would happen, you know what I mean. I knew there was going to be some negativity. But we do that; we’re that kind of band. It hadn’t been done before, and we were kind of looking for something that hadn’t been done before because it’s hard to come by these days.”
The mainstream charts are currently being topped by all that is booty. Songs with little to no substance or lyrical content soar to number one because some lassie is shaking her toosh, but the second a metal band try their hand at similar actions it’s a warzone.
What do you think? Have Mastadon taken a step too far or should they just put this all behind them?
As always, stay heavy.

Randy Blythe wrote a book.
Big news from Randy Blythe’s Instagram page as a recent post shows a stack of papers with “Dark Days by Randal Blythe” coupled with the caption “Completely done!”
Blythe has been in and out of the limelight over the past year with his Czech manslaughter trial. Obviously we’ve had several statements, along with a formal apology, about these events but it will be interesting to see the collected thoughts over the past 8 months from the Lamb of God frontman.
“This is what a completed 1st draft of a book manuscript looks like. I wrote this myself, mostly over the last eight months, and I finished it today at precisely 2:09pm. Next to it is an abridged dictionary I got for a quarter at the thrift store, placed here for perspective (in real life, I use a massive 3000 pound unabridged dictionary, of course). The single space typed manuscript stands thicker than the 600+ page dictionary – now its time to trim the fat. I have to do a quick edit of that last three chapters and the epilogue over the next few days, then send them to my editors, then the ball is in their court for a while – its time to let them kill some of my darlings, to paraphrase a saying often erroneously attributed to Faulkner.
There is still work to be done, the worst of it is over. I did it. I saw it through. I fulfilled a lifelong dream of mine: I wrote a book, I can hold it in my hands, and I am damn proud of it. The work is good. And right about now, I must admit I am feeling pretty damn MAJESTIC. I can’t wait to do it again.”
Much like the new Lamb of God album, it will probably be out sometime next year.
As always, stay heavy.

Suspected Metallica concert murderer captured 5 years later
Back in 2009 Morgan Dana Harrington was murdered after her last whereabouts being noted at a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, VA. After Metallica themselves spoke out when she was reported missing to then begin campaigning a reward for any information that would lead to her killer after her body was found with expected cause being homicide, the case seemed to have gone cold.
After 5 years it appears to have re-opened as Jesse Matthew, a man being charged with the disappearance of student Hannah Graham on the 13th September, is now under investigation as forensic evidence from Harrington’s murder has identified him positively as her killer.
Morgan’s family can now be at rest knowing that her killer is now in custody.
